Almost every website owner tracks the statistics of their websites with the free and powerful Google Analytics.

The service has made a huge step forward with its "live stats" feature which shows the instant activity.

There are very few reasons left to use another solution to track stats where one of them is the lack of "live overall stats" (as Google Analytics still displays the overall stats with a delay) and the other is the need for using an open source system.

ChiliStats

For anyone looking to see the overall stats in real-time and needs a simple/lightweight solution (compared to other options like Piwik), ChiliStats is an alternative.

The application is free, open source, built with PHP and uses MySQL for storing the data.

It presents a snapshot of the statistics -supported with charts- in a "OneView" page and sub-pages for viewing top-referrers, visited pages or referring keywords exist. And, a "History" page allows digging the statistics of past months.

ChiliStats also offers a stats counter widget to be integrated inside web pages.

Internet Blackout Day on January 18

WordPress.org is officially joining the protest against Senate Bill 968: the Protect IP Act that is coming before the U.S. Senate next week. As I wrote in my post a week ago, if this bill is passed it will jeopardize internet freedom and shift the power of the independent web into the hands of corporations. We must stop it.

On January 18, 2012 many sites around the web — from small personal blogs to internet institutions like Mozilla, Wikipedia, reddit, and I Can Has Cheezburger? – will be going dark in protest and to drive their visitors to sites like americancensorship.org to take action and help fight the passage of the Protect IP Act. So will WordPress.org.

If you want to join the protest by blacking out your WordPress site or applying a ribbon, there is now a variety of blackout plugins in the WordPress.org plugins directory. While joining the protest in this manner is laudable, please don’t forget to also make those phone calls to U.S. Senators — they’re the ones with the voting power.

syze is a standalone and tiny (<1kb) JavaScript-library for targeting web page designs by device or browser size very easily to build responsive websites.

The library allows us to define any number of breakpoints (as widths) with a single function and sets the class of <body> automatically on "window resize" or "change in orientation".

There are functions provided for collecting device + browser sizes and setting a custom debounce rate for making sure that no serious CPU load is created for the user's computer when syze is active.

syze also has a callback fired afte each event which is great for adding custom events to the mix.

Colors is a standalone JavaScript library that comes with features to manipulate colors in multiple ways.

The library can handle multiple types of unit conversions including RGB to a Hexadecimal and Hexadecimal to RGB or HSV.

It can get the complimentary color of any Hexadecimal or RGB value and can generate random color values.
