JavaScript is a simple text language. You write the code, plug it into your HTML document and you’re good to go. If you need to make changes, then just get into the code and rewrite it. Java requires writing the code in machine language, then compile it so that it fits into the HTML document. Any changes require rewriting and recompiling.

So if Java is so much more complicated, then why use it? Well, you may notice that you have never gone online and found a JavaScript applet. That’s because there is no such thing. In contrast to Java, JavaScript is not capable of any standalone programming. JavaScript only works as part of overarching HTML code. This makes your options much less flexible when it comes to what you can do with a JavaScript program.

With Java, you can create stand-alone programs and applets, which means you have much more flexibility. Java allows you to write just about any kind of small program that you need. You can also stick it just about anywhere in an HTML document because it is not actually a part of the document. This is why you will usually see more sophisticated programmers working with Java instead of JavaScript

This doesn’t mean you should give up on JavaScript entirely. Some programs work well as part of an HTML document and you can still create valuable programs with JavaScript. You can also adjust these programs more easily, so if you have a project that may require some fine-tuning, JavaScript may be a better option. It is also an appealing option for those with less programming experience.
